As Brazil and Sweden celebrate 200 years of diplomatic relations, cooperation in science, technology and innovation is entering a new phase. The Brazil-Sweden Strategic Partnership Action Plan 2026 provides a renewed framework for collaboration among governments, universities, research institutes and industry, creating new opportunities to address global challenges and accelerate sustainable development.

With strong alignment in areas such as digitalization, health, sustainable industry, mining, bioeconomy and advanced manufacturing, the two countries are expanding initiatives that combine scientific excellence, innovation and industrial competitiveness. For researchers and innovation stakeholders, this creates a favourable environment for new partnerships, joint projects, mobility programs and knowledge exchange.

Opportunities in Research and Innovation

Several recent developments demonstrate the growing momentum of Sweden-Brazil cooperation in research and innovation.

One of the most significant is HELIX (Knowledge Ecosystem between Sweden and Brazil in Life Science and Health), led by Karolinska Institutet in partnership with Lund University and Halmstad University. Supported by a SEK 10 million grant from STINT, HELIX aims to establish a long-term collaboration platform connecting academia, healthcare, industry and public-sector actors in both countries. The initiative focuses on data-driven health and artificial intelligence, clinical translation, and health system resilience, while also creating new mobility opportunities for PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers.

Another promising initiative is the Raw Materials Partnership for the Green and Digital Transition (RAMP), which seeks to strengthen international cooperation across sustainable raw material value chains. By bringing together governments, industry, research organizations and innovation ecosystems, RAMP offers new opportunities for Sweden and Brazil to collaborate in sustainable mining, electrification, circular economy solutions, critical minerals and advanced technologies essential for the green transition.

News from Brazil

Brazil has recently launched its new National Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (ENCTI) 2024-2034, the country's main policy framework for guiding investments in science, technology and innovation over the next decade. Priorities such as digital transformation, innovation, reindustrialization, sustainable development and strategic technologies align closely with Swedish strengths, creating favourable conditions for new bilateral research and innovation partnerships.

Another important development is the approval of Brazil's National Policy on Critical and Strategic Minerals (PNMCE). The policy aims to strengthen sustainable mining, mineral processing, innovation and industrial value addition while supporting strategic projects through new funding mechanisms. Together, Brazil's mineral resources and Sweden's expertise in sustainable mining, battery technologies, electrification and advanced manufacturing create strong opportunities for joint research, pilot projects and industrial collaboration.

A Recognized Model of International Cooperation

The strength of Sweden-Brazil collaboration was recently recognized through the ICAS von Karman Award for International Cooperation in Aeronautics, awarded to the Sweden-Brazil cooperation in aeronautics. Presented by the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS), the award honors international partnerships that deliver outstanding scientific, technological and societal impacts. The recognition highlights the success of a long-term collaboration model that brings together government, academia and industry to advance innovation in the aerospace sector.

Connecting People, Ideas and Partnerships

Throughout 2026, the Office of Science and Innovation (OSI Brasília) has continued to promote dialogue and collaboration between Swedish and Brazilian stakeholders through events involving Nordic partners, European institutions, universities, government agencies and industry representatives.

Recent engagements included participation in a Nordic panel discussion at Rio Innovation Week, discussing successful innovation ecosystems and opportunities for cooperation with Brazil, as well as a high-level meeting on industrial decarbonization and the green transition hosted by the Embassy of Sweden in Brazil. These activities reflect OSI Brasília's role in facilitating international partnerships and transforming shared interests into concrete collaboration opportunities.

Sweden-Brazil Innovation Week 2026

The 13th Sweden-Brazil Innovation Week (SBIW) 2026 will bring together representatives from government, academia, industry, startups and innovation organizations to explore new cooperation opportunities between Sweden and Brazil.

Organized by the Embassy of Sweden in Brazil and OSI Brasília, in cooperation with Team Sweden Brazil and the Sweden-Brazil Innovation Initiative (SBII), the event will focus on:
