System of Qualifications

1 Contents

As provided in Sections 4 & 5 of Chapter 6 this annex lays down:

  1. the qualifications that may be awarded in the first, second and third cycles, and
  2. the requirements to be fulfilled for the award of each qualification (qualification descriptors).

The Ordinance on the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (1993:221) and the Ordinance on the Swedish National Defence College (2007:1164) contain provisions on the qualifications that may be issued at Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet [Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences] and Försvarshögkolan [Swedish National Defence College].

2 General provisions

Title of qualification

The title of a qualification consists of a qualification as specified in this annex preceded or followed, where relevant, by a designation indicating the area of specialisation. Each higher education institution determines which designations shall be used. As the qualification descriptors indicate, for certain qualifications each higher education institution shall determine an area of specialisation.

Translation

A translation of the title of the qualification must reflect the scope and, where relevant, the field of specialisation of the qualification as well as the cycle in which the qualification is awarded.

Universitets- och högskolerådet [Swedish Council for Higher Education] may issue regulations on the translation of qualifications into English. Each higher education institution decides on the translation of a qualification in the degree certificate in languages other than English after consultation with the Swedish Council for Higher Education concerning the legal status that the translation of a qualification may have in other countries.

Each higher education institution decides on the translation of the designations it uses. The higher education institution shall notify the Swedish Council for Higher Education of the designations it has decided shall be used for each qualification in Swedish, as well as their translation into English.

Each higher education institution may also notify the Swedish Council for Higher Education of the translation of titles of qualifications into languages other than English. Ordinance (2012:712).

Higher Education Diploma [Högskoleexamen]

Scope

A Higher Education Diploma is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 120 credits with a defined specialisation determined by each higher education institution itself.

Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

For a Higher Education Diploma the student shall

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the principal field (main field of study) of the study programme, including awareness of the disciplinary foundation of the field and knowledge of some applicable methodologies in the field.

Competence and skills:

For a Higher Education Diploma the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to search for, gather and critically interpret the relevant information in order to formulate answers to well defined issues in the main field of study
  • demonstrate the ability to present and discuss his or her knowledge with different audiences, and
  • demonstrate the skills required to work autonomously with specific tasks in the main field of study.

Judgement and approach:

For a Higher Education Diploma the student shall demonstrate knowledge about and be equipped to deal with ethical issues in the main field of study.

Independent project (degree project)

A requirement for the award of a Higher Education Diploma is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) in the main field of study.

Miscellaneous

Specific requirements determined by each higher education institution itself within the parameters of the requirements laid down in this qualification descriptor shall also apply for a Higher Education Diploma with a defined specialisation.


Degree of Bachelor [Kandidatexamen]

Scope

A Degree of Bachelor is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 180 credits in a defined specialisation determined by each higher education institution itself, of which 90 credits are for progressively specialised study in the principal field (main field of study) of the programme.

Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

For a Degree of Bachelor the student shall

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the main field of study, including knowledge of the disciplinary foundation of the field, knowledge of applicable methodologies in the field, specialised study in some aspect of the field as well as awareness of current research issues.

Competence and skills:

For a Degree of Bachelor the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to search for, gather, evaluate and critically interpret the relevant information for a formulated problem and also discuss phenomena, issues and situations critically
  • demonstrate the ability to identify, formulate and solve problems autonomously and to complete tasks within predetermined time frames
  • demonstrate the ability to present and discuss information, problems and solutions in speech and writing and in dialogue with different audiences, and
  • demonstrate the skills required to work autonomously in the main field of study.

Judgement and approach:

For a Degree of Bachelor the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to make assessments in the main field of study informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues
  • demonstrate insight into the role of knowledge in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, and
  • demonstrate the ability to identify the need for further knowledge and ongoing learning.

Independent project (degree project)

A requirement for the award of a Degree of Bachelor is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) for at least 15 credits in the main field of study.

Miscellaneous

Specific requirements determined by each higher education institution itself within the parameters of the requirements laid down in this qualification descriptor shall also apply for a Degree of Bachelor with a defined specialisation.


Qualifications in the fine, applied and performing arts


 

Higher Education Diploma [Konstnärlig högskoleexamen]

Scope

A Higher Education Diploma in the fine, applied and performing arts is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 120 credits with a defined specialisation determined by each higher education institution itself.

Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

For a Higher Education Diploma in the fine, applied and performing arts the student shall

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the principal field (main field of study) of the programme, including awareness of the practical and disciplinary foundation of the field and knowledge and experience of some methods and processes in the field.

Competence and skills:

For a Higher Education Diploma in the fine, applied and performing arts the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to describe, analyse and interpret design, techniques and content in the main field of study
  • demonstrate the ability in the main field of study to create, realise and express his or her own artistic ideas and undertake artistic tasks within predetermined time frames
  • demonstrate the ability to present and discuss his or her knowledge with different audiences, and
  • demonstrate the competence and knowledge required to work autonomously in a professional capacity.

Judgement and approach:

For a Higher Education Diploma in the fine, applied and performing arts the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to reflect on artistic, social and ethical issues within the main field of study.

Independent project (degree project)

A requirement for the award of a Higher Education Diploma in the fine, applied and performing arts is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) in the main field of study.

Scope

A Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 180 credits in a defined specialisation determined by each higher education institution itself.

For a Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts the student shall

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the principal field (main field of study), including knowledge of the practical and theoretical foundation of the field, knowledge and experience of methods and processes in the field as well as specialised study within the field.

For a Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to describe, analyse and interpret design, techniques and content as well as to reflect critically on his or her artistic approach and that of others in the main field of study

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy the student shall demonstrate the knowledge and skills required for registration as an occupational therapist.

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy the student shall

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to undertake autonomously and in cooperation with individuals occupational therapy interventions that prevent, alleviate and compensate for impaired mobility
  • demonstrate the ability to identify and undertake environmentally focused interventions at both individual, group and community level

Scope

A Degree of Bachelor of Science in Audiology is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 180 credits.

Outcomes

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Audiology the student shall demonstrate the knowledge and skills required for registration as an audiologist.

Knowledge and understanding:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Audiology the student shall

  • demonstrate knowledge of the disciplinary foundation of the field and awareness of current research and development work as well as the links between research and proven experience and the significance of these links for professional practice
  • demonstrate knowledge of hearing and its importance for the individual as well as factors that affect hearing health, and
  • demonstrate knowledge of the relevant statutory provisions.

Competence and skills:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Audiology the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to undertake hearing examinations and also to assess autonomously and, in collaboration with the patient, plan, conduct and evaluate habilitation and rehabilitation interventions
  • demonstrate the ability to identify, initiate and participate in health promotion and preventive interventions intended to prevent the occurrence of hearing impairment
  • demonstrate the ability to apply his or her knowledge to deal with different situations, phenomena and issues on the basis of the needs of individuals and groups
  • demonstrate the ability to inform and instruct different audiences
  • demonstrate the ability to present and discuss in speech and writing interventions and treatment outcomes with those concerned and to document them in accordance with the relevant statutory provisions

Scope

A Degree of Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Science is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 180 credits.

Outcomes

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Science the student shall demonstrate the knowledge and skills required for registration as a biomedical analyst.

Knowledge and understanding:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Science the student shall

  • demonstrate knowledge of the disciplinary foundation of the field and awareness of current research and development work as well as the links between research and proven experience and the significance of these links for professional practice
  • demonstrate knowledge of relevant methods in the field, and
  • demonstrate knowledge of the relevant statutory provisions.

Competence and skills:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Science the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to plan and undertake analyses and examinations autonomously and to cooperate in these with patients and those close to them
  • demonstrate the ability to develop, use and assure the quality of biomedical laboratory and testing methods
  • demonstrate the ability to apply his or her knowledge to deal with different situations, phenomena and issues on the basis of the needs of individuals and groups
  • demonstrate the ability to inform and instruct different audiences
  • demonstrate the ability to gather, appraise and critically interpret the findings of analyses and examinations, notice and deal with deviations, as well as to present and discuss the results in speech and writing with those concerned and to document them in accordance with the relevant statutory provisions
  • demonstrate the capacity for teamwork and cooperation with other professional categories, and
  • demonstrate the ability to review, assess and use relevant information critically and to discuss new data, phenomena and issues with various audiences and so contribute to the development of the profession and professional practice.

Judgement and approach:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Laboratory Science the student shall

Degree of Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering [Brandingenjörsexamen]

Scope

A Degree of Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 210 credits.

Outcomes

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering the student shall demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work autonomously as a Fire Protection Engineer.

Knowledge and understanding:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering the student shall

  • demonstrate knowledge of the disciplinary foundation of the field and proven experience as well as awareness of current research and development work, and
  • demonstrate specialised knowledge in the field of fire protection engineering and relevant knowledge of mathematics and the natural sciences.

Competence and skills:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to use and develop, autonomously and critically, methods and techniques relating to fire protection in buildings, community planning, risk and crisis management and the rescue services
  • demonstrate the ability to prevent accidents and damage and to provide a platform for effective rescue service measures
  • demonstrate the ability to identify, formulate and deal with complex issues autonomously and creatively and also to analyse and evaluate various technical solutions
  • demonstrate the ability to plan and with the use of appropriate measures to undertake tasks within predetermined parameters
  • demonstrate the ability to use knowledge critically and systematically to model, simulate, predict and evaluate series of events on the basis of relevant information
  • demonstrate the ability to design and manage processes and systems while taking into account the circumstances and needs of individuals and the sustainable development required by the community
  • demonstrate the capacity for teamwork and collaboration with various constellations, and
  • demonstrate the ability to present and discuss his or her conclusions and the knowledge and reasoning on which they are based in speech and writing and in dialogue with different audiences.

Judgement and approach:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to make assessments informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues
  • demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of fire protection engineering, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, including social and economic aspects as well as environmental aspects, and 
  • demonstrate the ability to identify the need for further knowledge and undertake ongoing development of his or her skills.

Independent project (degree project)

A requirement for the award of a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) for at least 15 credits.

Miscellaneous

Degree of Bachelor of Science in Dietetics [Dietistexamen]

Scope

A Degree of Bachelor of Science in Dietetics is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 180 credits.

Outcomes

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Dietetics the student shall demonstrate the knowledge and skills required for registration as a dietitian.

Knowledge and understanding:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Dietetics the student shall

  • demonstrate knowledge of the disciplinary foundation of the field and awareness of current research and development work as well as the links between research and proven experience and the significance of these links for professional practice, and
  • demonstrate knowledge of the relevant statutory provisions.

Competence and skills:

For a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Dietetics the student shall

  • demonstrate the ability to examine and assess nutritional intake, nutritional status and nutritional requirements autonomously and in collaboration with the patient
  • demonstrate the ability to plan and manage nutritional requirements for different groups in the community and also the ability to provide training and information on diet and health
  • demonstrate the ability to prevent, analyse, assess, treat and evaluate problems, symptoms and illnesses related to diet and nutrition
  • demonstrate the ability to initiate and use new methods in the field
  • demonstrate the ability to apply his or her knowledge to deal with different situations, phenomena and issues on the basis of the needs of individuals and groups
  • demonstrate the ability to inform and instruct different audiences
  • demonstrate the ability to present and discuss interventions and treatment outcomes with those concerned in speech and writing and also to document them in accordance with the relevant statutory provisions

Higher Education Certificate in Folk High School Education [Folkhögskollärarexamen]

Scope

A Higher education certificate in Folk High School Education is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 60 credits.

Outcomes

For a Higher education certificate in Folk High School Education the student shall demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work autonomously as a teacher in a folk high school or to lead study circles for adults.

Knowledge and understanding:

For a Higher education certificate in Folk High School Education the student shall

  • demonstrate the knowledge needed to attain the objectives of his or her activities and participate in their development, and

Scope

A Degree of Master (60 credits) is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 60 credits with a defined specialisation determined by each higher education institution itself, of which at least 30 credits are for specialised study in the principal field (main field of study) of the study programme. In addition the prior award of a Degree of Bachelor, a Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, a professional or vocational qualification of at least 180 credits or a corresponding qualification from abroad is required.

The requirement of the prior award of a qualification may be waived for a student admitted to the programme without the basic entry requirement in the form of a qualification. This does not, however, apply if a waiver was granted during admission pursuant to the second paragraph of Section 28 of Chapter 7 on the grounds that the qualification had not yet been issued.

In addition the prior award of a Degree of Bachelor, a Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, a professional or vocational qualification of at least 180 credits or a corresponding qualification from abroad is required.

The requirement of the prior award of a qualification may be waived for a student admitted to the programme without the basic entry requirement in the form of a qualification. Scope

A Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Training with the defined specialisation is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 90 credits. In addition, the prior award of a Degree of Bachelor/Degree of Master of Arts in Primary Education, Degree of Master of Arts/Science in Secondary/Upper Secondary Education, Higher Education Diploma in Vocational Education, Bachelor of Arts in Pre-School Education or a corresponding previous qualification is required.

A Postgraduate Diploma in Special Needs Training is awarded with specialisation in

  • the development of language, writing and reading,
  • mathematical development,
  • deafness or hearing disabilities,
  • visual disabilities,
  • serious language disabilities, and
  • intellectual disabilities.

For specialisation in the development of language, writing and reading prior award of a qualification including subject studies in Swedish or in the domain of language, writing and reading development is required. If a previously awarded qualification does not include these subject studies, students are required instead to supplement their qualifications with the corresponding knowledge.

For specialisation in mathematical development prior award of a qualification including subject studies in mathematics or in the domain of mathematical development is required. Scope

A Postgraduate Diploma in Special Educational Needs is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 90 credits. In addition the prior award of a Degree of Bachelor/Degree of Master of Arts in Primary Education, Degree of Master of Arts/Science in Secondary Education, Higher Education Diploma in Vocational Education, Degree of Bachelor of Arts/Science in Early Years Education or corresponding previous qualification is required.

Outcomes

For a Postgraduate Diploma in Special Educational Needs the student shall demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work autonomously as a special needs teacher for children and pupils who need special support.

Knowledge and understanding

For a Postgraduate Diploma in Special Educational Needs the student shall

    • demonstrate knowledge of the disciplinary foundation of the field and insight into current research and development work as well as the links between research and proven experience and the significance of these links for professional practice, and

The degrees of Degree of Master of Arts in Primary Education - Pre-School and School Years 1-3 [Grundlärarexamen med inriktning mot arbete i förskoleklass och grundskolans årskurs 1–3] and Degree of Master of Arts in Primary Education - School Years 4-6 [Grundlärarexamen med inriktning mot arbete i grundskolans årskurs 4–6] are second-cycle qualifications awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 240 credits.

Outcomes

For a Degree of Bachelor/Master or Arts in Primary Education the student shall demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work autonomously as a primary teacher in the specialisation for which the qualification is awarded. The student shall also demonstrate knowledge and skills for other forms of teaching for which the degree, pursuant to the applicable regulations, qualifies him or her.

A Degree of Master of Arts/Science in Upper Secondary Education is awarded at second-cycle level after the student has completed courses for 300 or, when required, 330 credits.

Outcomes

For a Degree of Master of Arts/Science in Secondary/Upper Secondary Education the student shall demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to work autonomously as a subject teacher in the specialisation for which the qualification is awarded. The student shall also demonstrate knowledge and skills for other forms of teaching for which the qualification, pursuant to the applicable regulations, qualifies him or her.

THIRD-CYCLE QUALIFICATIONS

Degree of Licentiate [Licentiatexamen]

Scope

A Degree of Licentiate is awarded

either after a third-cycle student has completed a study programme of at least 120 credits in a subject in which third-cycle teaching is offered,

or after a third-cycle student has completed one part comprising at least 120 credits of a study programme intended to conclude with the award of a PhD, if a higher education institution decides that a Degree of Licentiate of this kind may be awarded at the institution.

Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

For a Degree of Licentiate the third-cycle student shall demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the field of research including current specialist knowledge in a limited area of this field as well as specialised knowledge of research methodology in general and the methods of the specific field of research in particular.

Competence and skills

For a Degree of Licentiate the third-cycle student shall

Scope

A Degree of Doctor is awarded after the third-cycle student has completed a study programme of 240 credits in a subject in which third-cycle teaching is offered.

Knowledge and understanding

For the Degree of Doctor the third-cycle student shall

    • demonstrate broad knowledge and systematic understanding of the research field as well as advanced and up-to-date specialised knowledge in a limited area of this field, and
    • demonstrate familiarity with research methodology in general and the methods of the specific field of research in particular.

Competence and skills

For the Degree of Doctor the third-cycle student shall

  • demonstrate the capacity for scholarly analysis and synthesis as well as to review and assess new and complex phenomena, issues and situations autonomously and critically
  • demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate issues with scholarly precision critically, autonomously and creatively, and to plan and use appropriate methods to undertake research and other qualified tasks within predetermined time frames and to review and evaluate such work
  • demonstrate through a dissertation the ability to make a significant contribution to the formation of knowledge through his or her own research

Scope

A Degree of Licentiate in the fine, applied and performing arts is awarded

either after a third-cycle student has completed a study programme of at least 120 credits in a subject in which third-cycle teaching is offered,

or after a third-cycle student has completed one part comprising at least 120 credits of a study programme intended to conclude with the award of a Degree of Doctor in the fine, applied and performing arts, if a higher education institution decides that a Degree of Licentiate in the fine, applied and performing arts of this kind may be awarded at the institution.

For a Degree of Licentiate in the fine, applied and performing arts the third-cycle student shall

    • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the field of research including current specialist knowledge in his or her artistic field as well as specialised knowledge of research methodology in general and the methods of the specific field of research in particular.
