Contents
This annex lays down:
- the qualifications that may be awarded in the first, second and third cycle and the fields of study in which they may be awarded at the Swedish Defence University, and
- the requirements to be fulfilled for the award of each qualification (qualification descriptors).
General provisions
Title of qualification
The title of a qualification consists of a qualification as specified in this annex preceded or followed, where relevant, by a designation indicating the area of specialisation. The Swedish Defence University determines which designations are to be used. As the qualification descriptors indicate, for certain qualifications the Swedish Defence University shall determine an area of specialisation.
Translation
A translation of the title of the qualification must reflect the scope and, where relevant, the field of specialisation of the qualification as well as the cycle in which the qualification is awarded.
The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education may issue regulations on the translation of qualifications into English. The Swedish Defence University decides on the translation of a qualification in the degree certificate in languages other than English after consultation with the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education concerning the legal status that the translation of a qualification may have in other countries.
The Swedish Defence University decides on the translation of the designations it uses. The Swedish Defence University shall notify the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education of the designations it has decided shall be used for each qualification in Swedish, as well as their translation into English.
The Swedish Defence University may also notify the National Agency for Higher Education of the translation of titles of qualifications into languages other than English.

Higher education diploma
Scope
A Higher Education Diploma is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 120 credits with a defined specialisation determined by the Swedish Defence University itself.
Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a Higher Education Diploma the student shall have:
- demonstrated knowledge and understanding in the principal area (main field of study) of the study programme, including awareness of the disciplinary foundation of the field and knowledge of some applicable methodologies in the field.
Competence and skills
For a Higher Education Diploma the student shall have:
- demonstrated the ability to search for, gather and critically interpret relevant information in order to formulate answers to well defined issues in the main field of study
- demonstrated the ability to present and discuss his or her knowledge with different audiences, and
- demonstrated the skills required to work autonomously with specific tasks in the main field of study.
Judgement and approach
For a Higher Education Diploma the student shall have:
- demonstrated knowledge about and be equipped to deal with ethical issues in the main field of study.
Independent project (degree project)
A requirement for the award of a Higher Education Diploma is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) in the main field of study.
Miscellaneous
Specific requirements determined by the Swedish Defence University itself within the parameters of the requirements laid down in this qualification descriptor shall also apply for a Higher Education Diploma with a defined specialisation.
Degree of Bachelor
Scope
A Degree of Bachelor is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 180 credits in a defined specialisation determined by the Swedish Defence University itself, of which 90 credits are for progressively specialised study in the principal field (main field of study) of the programme.
Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a Degree of Bachelor the student shall have:
- demonstrated knowledge and understanding in the main field of study, including knowledge of the disciplinary foundation of the field, understanding of applicable methodologies in the field, specialised study in some aspect of the field as well as awareness of current research issues.
Competence and skills
For a Degree of Bachelor the student shall have:
- demonstrated the ability to search for, gather, evaluate and critically interpret relevant information for a formulated problem and also discuss phenomena, issues and situations critically
- demonstrated the ability to identify, formulate and solve problems autonomously and to complete tasks within predetermined time frames
- demonstrated the ability to present and discuss information, problems and solutions in speech and writing and in dialogue with different audiences, and
- demonstrated the skills required to work autonomously in the main field of study.
- Judgement and approach
- For a Degree of Bachelor the student shall have:
- demonstrated the ability to make assessments in the main field of study informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues
- demonstrated insight into the role of knowledge in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, and
- demonstrated the ability to identify the need for further knowledge and ongoing learning.
Independent project (degree project)
A requirement for the award of a Degree of Bachelor is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) for at least 15 credits in the main field of study.
Miscellaneous
Specific requirements determined by the Swedish Defence University itself within the parameters of the requirements laid down in this qualification descriptor shall also apply for a Degree of Bachelor with a defined specialisation.
Professional qualifications
Degree of Bachelor of Science in Military Studies
Scope
A Degree of Bachelor of Science in Military Studies is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 180 credits.
Outcomes
For the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Military Studies the student shall have demonstrated the knowledge and skills required to work autonomously as an officer.
Knowledge and understanding
For the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Military Studies the student shall have:
- demonstrated knowledge of the disciplinary foundation of the field and proven experience as well as awareness of current research and development work and the link between research and proven experience and its significance for professional practice
- demonstrated the breadth of knowledge required to take responsibility for personnel and material in a commanding role during military operations
- demonstrated understanding of the mechanisms and interactions in military conflicts across the entire spectrum
- demonstrated knowledge of crisis management in periods of social tension, and
- demonstrated knowledge of both national and international statutes and regulations that are relevant.
Competence and skills
For the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Military Studies the student shall have:
- demonstrated the ability to take an overall view in planning, commanding and, using appropriate methods, undertaking tasks within predetermined parameters
- demonstrated the ability to train, inform and support different groups
- demonstrated the ability to apply his or her knowledge to manage different situations, phenomena and issues on the basis of the requirements of the task, the individual or the group
- demonstrated the ability to review, assess and use relevant information critically and systematically
- demonstrated the capacity for teamwork and collaboration with various constellations, and
- demonstrated the ability, in both national and international contexts and to different audiences, to present and discuss information, problems and solutions in speech and writing.
Judgement and approach
For the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Military Studies the student shall have:
- demonstrated self-awareness and the capacity for empathy
- demonstrated the ability to think in security terms in various situations
- demonstrated the ability in professional practice to make judgements informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues and with special concern for human rights
- demonstrated insight into the possibilities and limitations of technology, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, including military, social and economic aspects as well as environmental and health and safety aspects
- demonstrated the ability to adopt a professional approach, and
- demonstrated the ability to identify the need for further knowledge and undertake ongoing development of his or her skills.
Independent project (degree project)
A requirement for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Military Studies is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) for at least 15 credits in the main field of study.
Miscellaneous
Specific requirements determined by the Swedish Defence University itself within the parameters of the requirements laid down in this qualification descriptor shall also apply for a Degree of Bachelor of Science in Military Studies with a defined specialisation.
Second-cycle qualifications
General qualifications
Degree of Master (60 credits)
Scope
A Degree of Master (60 credits) is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 60 HE credits with a defined specialisation determined by the Swedish Defence University itself, of which at least 30 credits are for specialised study in the principal field (main field of study) of the study programme. In addition, the prior award of a Degree of Bachelor, Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts, or a professional or vocational qualification of at least 180 credits or a corresponding qualification from abroad is required.
The requirement of the prior award of a qualification may be waived for a student admitted to the programme without the basic entry requirement in the form of a qualification. This does not, however, apply if a waiver was granted during admission pursuant to the second paragraph of Section 28 of the Chapter 7 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100) on the grounds that the qualification had not yet been issued.
Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a Degree of Master (60 credits) the student shall have:
- demonstrated knowledge and understanding in the main field of study, including both an overview of the field and specialised knowledge in certain areas of the field as well as insight into current research and development work, and
- demonstrated specialised methodological knowledge in the main field of study.
Competence and skills
For a Degree of Master (60 credits) the student shall have:
- demonstrated the ability to integrate knowledge and analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations even with limited information
- demonstrated the ability to identify and formulate issues autonomously as well as to plan and, using appropriate methods, undertake advanced tasks within predetermined time frames
- demonstrated the ability in speech and writing to report clearly and discuss his or her conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which they are based in dialogue with different audiences, and
- demonstrated the skills required for participation in research and development work or employment in some other qualified capacity.
Judgement and approach
For a Degree of Master (60 credits) the student shall have:
- demonstrated the ability to make assessments in the main field of study informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues and also to demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work
- demonstrated insight into the possibilities and limitations of research, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, and
- demonstrated the ability to identify the personal need for further knowledge and take responsibility for his or her ongoing learning.
Independent project (degree project)
A requirement for the award of a Degree of Master (60 credits) is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) for at least 15 credits in the main field of study.
Miscellaneous
Specific requirements determined by the Swedish Defence University itself within the parameters of the requirements laid down in this qualification descriptor shall also apply for a Degree of Master with a defined specialisation.
Degree of Master (120 credits) [Masterexamen]
Scope
A Degree of Master (120 credits) is awarded after the student has completed the courses required to gain 120 credits with a defined specialisation determined by the Swedish Defence University, of which at least 60 credits are for specialised study in the principal field (main field of study) of the study programme. In addition the prior award of a Degree of Bachelor, a Degree of Bachelor in Fine Arts, a professional or vocational qualification of at least 180 credits or a corresponding qualification from abroad is required.
The requirement of the prior award of a qualification may be waived for a student admitted to the programme without the basic entry requirement in the form of a qualification. This does not, however, apply if a waiver was granted during admission pursuant to the second paragraph of Section 28 of Chapter 7 on the grounds that the qualification had not yet been issued.

For a Degree of Master (120 credits) the student shall
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the main field of study, including both broad knowledge of the field and a considerable degree of specialised knowledge in certain areas of the field as well as insight into current research and development work, and
- demonstrate specialised methodological knowledge in the main field of study.
Competence and skills
For a Degree of Master (120 credits) the student shall
- demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations even with limited information,
- demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate issues critically, autonomously and creatively as well as to plan and, using appropriate methods, undertake advanced tasks within predetermined time frames and so contribute to the formation of knowledge as well as the ability to evaluate this work,
- demonstrate the ability in speech and writing both nationally and internationally to clearly report and discuss his or her conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which they are based in dialogue with different audiences, and
- demonstrate the skills required for participation in research and development work or autonomous employment in some other qualified capacity.
Judgement and approach
For a Degree of Master (120 credits) the student shall
- demonstrate the ability to make assessments in the main field of study informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues and also to demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work,
- demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of research, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, and
- demonstrate the ability to identify the personal need for further knowledge and take responsibility for his or her ongoing learning.
Independent project (degree project)
A requirement for the award of a Degree of Master (120 credits) is completion by the student of an independent project (degree project) for at least 30 credits in the main field of study. The degree project may comprise less than 30 credits, however no less than 15 credits, if the student has already completed an independent project in the second cycle for at least 15 credits in the main field of study or the equivalent from a programme of study outside Sweden

Specific requirements determined by the each higher education institution itself within the parameters of the requirements laid down in this qualification descriptor shall also apply for a Degree of Master (120 credits) with a defined specialisation.
Third-cycle qualifications
General Qualifications
Degree of Licentiate [Licentiatexamen]
Scope
A Degree of Licentiate is awarded either after a third-cycle student has completed a study programme of at least 120 credits in a subject in which third-cycle teaching is offered, or after a third-cycle student has completed one part comprising at least 120 credits of a study programme intended to conclude with the award of a PhD, if a higher education institution decides that a Degree of Licentiate of this kind may be awarded at the institution
Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For a Degree of Licentiate the third-cycle student shall
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the field of research including current specialist knowledge in a limited area of this field as well as specialised knowledge of research methodology in general and the methods of the specific field of research in particular.
Competence and skills
For a Degree of Licentiate the third-cycle student shall
- demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate issues with scholarly precision critically, autonomously and creatively, and to plan and use appropriate methods to undertake a limited piece of research and other qualified tasks within predetermined time frames in order to contribute to the formation of knowledge as well as to evaluate this work,
- demonstrate the ability in both national and international contexts to present and discuss research and research findings in speech and writing and in dialogue with the academic community and society in general, and
- demonstrate the skills required to participate autonomously in research and development work and to work autonomously in some other qualified capacity.
Judgement and approach
For a Degree of Licentiate the third-cycle student shall
- demonstrate the ability to make assessments of ethical aspects of his or her own research,
- demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of research, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, and
- demonstrate the ability to identify the personal need for further knowledge and take responsibility for his or her ongoing learning.
Thesis
For a Degree of Licentiate the third-cycle student shall have been awarded a pass grade for a research thesis of at least 60 credits.
Miscellaneous
Specific requirements determined by each higher education institution itself within the parameters of the requirements laid down in this qualification descriptor shall also apply for a Degree of Licentiate with a defined specialisation.
Degree of Doctor [Doktorsexamen]
Scope
A Degree of Doctor is awarded after the third-cycle student has completed a study programme of 240 credits in a subject in which third-cycle teaching is offered.
Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
For the Degree of Doctor the third-cycle student shall
- demonstrate broad knowledge and systematic understanding of the research field as well as advanced and up-to-date specialised knowledge in a limited area of this field, and
- demonstrate familiarity with research methodology in general and the methods of the specific field of research in particular.
Competence and skills
For the Degree of Doctor the third-cycle student shall
- demonstrate the capacity for scholarly analysis and synthesis as well as to review and assess new and complex phenomena, issues and situations autonomously and critically,
- demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate issues with scholarly precision critically, autonomously and creatively, and to plan and use appropriate methods to undertake research and other qualified tasks within predetermined time frames and to review and evaluate such work,
- demonstrate through a dissertation the ability to make a significant contribution to the formation of knowledge through his or her own research,
- demonstrate the ability in both national and international contexts to present and discuss research and research findings authoritatively in speech and writing and in dialogue with the academic community and society in general,
- demonstrate the ability to identify the need for further knowledge and
- demonstrate the capacity to contribute to social development and support the learning of others both through research and education and in some other qualified professional capacity.
Judgement and approach
For the Degree of Doctor the third-cycle student shall
- demonstrate intellectual autonomy and disciplinary rectitude as well as the ability to make assessments of research ethics, and
- demonstrate specialised insight into the possibilities and limitations of research, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used.
Research thesis (doctoral thesis)
For the Degree of Doctor the third-cycle student shall have been awarded a pass grade for a research thesis (doctoral thesis) of at least 120 credits.
Miscellaneous
Specific requirements determined by each higher education institution itself within the parameters of the requirements laid down in this qualification descriptor shall also apply for a Degree of Doctor with a defined specialisation.
