If you plan to study in Sweden

An evaluation of your upper secondary education can be helpful when planning future studies in Sweden. It shows whether your education provides you with the general entry requirements for higher education or not.

If you have a foreign upper-secondary education

An evaluation from UHR provides general information about your education.

  • The Qualifications Assessment Tool is a digital self-service that lets you know what your foreign qualification compares to in Sweden. There you can see general information about your education, and whether it gives access to university studies: Qualifications Assessment Tool.
  • You can also apply for an assessment and get a personal recognition statement from UHR: Application for foreign qualification assessment

The evaluation shows whether your education provides you with the general entry requirements for higher education. That is, what is required to study at the university in Sweden. You see which subjects you have specific eligibility in and your meritpoint.

Some educations require specific entry requirements, e. you have studied specific subjects at a specific level. If your education give you access to higher education, the evaluation will also show whether your education provides you with specific entry requirements for particular subjects. Subjects that are not necessary for specific entry requirements, such as psychology, computer science or economics, are not evaluated.

Other recognition statements do not show eligibility

A recognition statement from UHRof secondary vocational education, post-secondary vocational education or university education does not show whether you are eligible for studies. However, it shows that you have completed and recognized education and is useful when you are looking for a job.

It is the higher education institution that makes decisions regarding eligibility and admissions. It is not necessary to have an evaluation of your foreign qualification to be able to apply for higher education.
You can apply straight to the higher education institution and the evaluation is then carried out in association with your application to study.

The important thing to remember is that you don’t need to wait for a statement from us before applying to higher education, as an evaluation of your eligibility is done directly.

You can find more information and apply to higher education via Antagning.se.

If you have completed some higher education and passed the courses, or have the equivalent professional experience, you are entitled to have the credits transferred for studies at another higher education institution (HEI).

If you have foreign higher education and wish to continue studying in Sweden, consult the HEI at which you wish to study for information about how to apply for a credit transfer from your foreign course or programme.

If you wish to continue studying at Master’s level, it is the HEI that makes decisions regarding eligibility and admissions.

Applications and more information at Antagning.se

If the HEI needs help in evaluating your foreign education, you can refer them to UHR. You do not need to take a statement from UHR to the HEI in order to transfer the credits from your studies.

Request a written reply from the HEI

A formal application for credit transfer is often only possible after you have been admitted to a course or programme. When you have applied for a credit transfer, it is important that you request a written reply from the HEI. This should also include information about how to appeal the decision.

Rules that govern credit transfers

It is the HEI at which you wish to study that decides whether you can transfer the credits from your studies or not. The HEI does this on the basis of the rules relating to credit transfers in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 6, Sections 6-8, and the Lisbon Recognition Convention.

A statement on higher education (e.g. a Bachelor’s degree) from UHR does not provide any guarantee or advantage when applying for Master’s courses.
